The first of the thematic ‘Meridyen Meetings’ initiated by the Meridyen Association was held with the attendance of Turkey’s first lady Mrs. Hayrunnisa Gül on Dec. 24, 2010.

Hayrunnisa Gül, Turkey’s first lady, became the first guest speaker of the thematic ‘Meridyen Meetings’ initiated by the Meridyen Association.

The meeting, focused on “Investment in Mankind/ Encouragement of Global Success,” took place at the Istanbul Marriott Hotel Asia, and saw attendance from academics, artists and writers in addition to numerous businesswomen, NGO representatives and Meridyen Association members and volunteers. Among the guests were Dr. Sare Davutoğlu, the wife of Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu; journalist-author Gülay Göktürk; lawyer Kezban Hatemi, one of the pioneers of civil society missions in Turkey; Dr. Gülsen Ataseven, chair of the Turkish Women’s Culture Association (TÜRKKAD) Istanbul branch; founder of the University of North Carolina Chair of Islam, Cemalnur Sargut; and illumination artist Professor Çiçek Derman.

Guest of honor Hayrunnisa Gül emphasized the importance of education in her remarks, stating that education had never before in history been as significant for a country as it is today, and that the greatest asset for contemporary nations is a well-educated human force.

Following her speech, Gül was presented with a plaque of appreciation by Meridyen Association Chair H. Hümeyra Şahin.

One of the Meridyen Association’s founders, Dr. Sare Davutoğlu also gave a brief speech which underlined the importance of activities in the field of education.

Chair H. Hümeyra Şahin spoke about the Meridyen Association’s projects as an academic-based NGO to provide support for projects led by social scientists.

During the event’s panel discussion, entitled “Investment in Mankind/ Encouragement of Global Success,” which was moderated by Dr. Nihal Ş. Utku, the significance of the Meridyen Association’s academic scholarships for the development of social scientists was highlighted. Assistant Professor Şeyma Arslan, Associate Professor Ayşen Gürcan and Dr. Betül Argıt each gave presentations on the qualifying types of education in this regard.
